My father has been a car dealer for over 35 years. I learned about the car business at the dinner table, when I was young. Later on in life I started working sweeping the lot and washing cars. After my college years I learned the sales side of the business and was in several management positions. GM required several years of typical dealer education at their education centers before I was able and allowed to take over from my dad. After passing all the tests and classes and working as a general manager I was able to run a dealership in real life and GM gave me permission to take over from my dad.
This is a lot more difficult than most people think. Now I am building a staff that I can rely on, and we have seen very nice increases in sales so far in both new and used cars and trucks. Our service department has the highest customer satisfaction index among dealers in our zone, and our parts department is stocked with more parts because our connection with our RV dealership. |
