Scott's practice focuses on corporate transactions, with an emphasis on intellectual property, technology contracting, licensing law, Internet and electronic commerce, and business strategy and advising. Additional areas of practice include intellectual property litigation and appeals, information technology, and outsourcing.
Scott's background and expertise are unique because he has worked for many years as an executive within corporations. He has served as CEO and President, COO, General Counsel, Director and General Manager during his career. These positions have given Scott a unique understanding of the pressures under which his corporate clients operate. As a result, his practice and client base has grown not around particular areas as much as around particular clients who want a counselor with firsthand and long-term business experience. Scott's clients want a lawyer to help run their businesses and transactions, not just paper them.
Scott has also worked with venture capital firms and technology companies as an advisor. He has helped build and manage a diverse range of technology companies, including B2B Internet portals and distance-learning companies.
Additionally, Scott was Vice President of Westcott Communications (Nasdaq:WCTV), a significant provider of workplace training and education using various technologies, and was Founder and General Manager of the Executive Education Network (EXEN). EXEN’s interactive multimedia network provided courseware directly to electronic classrooms installed in corporations worldwide. Under Scott’s guidance, EXEN attracted 70 Fortune 500 corporate clients in its first eight months of operation. Representative clients included Johnson & Johnson, Texas Instruments, Glaxo Wellcome, EDS and Motorola. Business Week, CNBC, the Financial Times, the Associated Press, Texas Business and a Harvard University case study chronicled the development of EXEN and Scott's leadership. Scott also helped facilitate the sale of Westcott to K-III Communications / Primedia / Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.
