Dr. Sandra J. Hong is a Managing Scientist in Exponent’s Health Sciences practice. Her areas of expertise include neurotoxicology and carcinogenicity of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds. Dr. Hong has ten years of consulting experience performing risk assessments toxicology evaluations and product stewardship of industrial chemicals and petroleum products.
In the petrochemical industry Dr. Hong’s work focused on product stewardship risk assessments and laboratory methods development. Dr. Hong refined short-term test methodologies and data analysis approaches for predicting the carcinogenic potential of petroleum streams based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons content. For two years Dr. Hong also led the toxicology emergency response team responding to health concerns arising from accidental spills leaks and worker exposures.
Dr. Hong’s doctoral research focused on the neuroactivity of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons including dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls. Dr. Hong also studied neurotoxicological effects of organophosphorus compounds a class of chemicals used as pesticides and chemical warfare agents. As an undergraduate Dr. Hong conducted behavioral research on non-human primates in study of learning and memory processes as well as a comprehensive literature review to investigate possible mechanisms underlying the observed effects. |
