With over 25 years of experience as a Congressional and gubernatorial staffer, political strategist, and government affairs professional, Ms. Smith is a seasoned Capitol Hill advocate, helping to bridge the gap between federal and state policymakers and private industry. Her experience spans the development and execution of multi-faceted public policy strategies for leading energy, aerospace, defense and insurance companies.
Ms. Smith’s distinguished career includes her position as Vice President of Federal Government Relations for The Travelers Companies, Inc., the nation’s second largest commercial property casualty insurer. During her tenure, she established the company’s federal government relations office and grew the organization’s national political profile.
Formerly, Ms. Smith was the Executive Director of Federal Governmental Affairs for Northeast Utilities, where she established the first full-time Washington DC office for New England’s largest energy company. Prior to that, she was the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Aerospace Industries Association.
Ms. Smith has also spent a considerable amount of time in public service. As the director of the State of Connecticut’s Washington, DC office, she served as a member of the governors’ senior staff and represented the state’s interests before Congress. During her tenure she worked on Medicaid and Welfare reform, defended against the closure of state military bases, and obtained favorable treatment on the transportation and appropriation interests of the state.
Ms. Smith’s time on Capitol Hill included running the Washington, DC office and serving as a Legislative Assistant to Congressman John G. Rowland (R-CT).
