Robert E. Bouma is Senior Counsel in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in its Chicago office. As a member of the Trial Department, he practices primarily in the areas of business litigation and general corporate law. He has conducted a number of special investigations for multinational corporations, including their boards of directors and board committees.
Before joining McDermott in 1984, Bob was senior vice president and general counsel of Household International; associate general counsel of Monsanto Co.; senior group counsel at Xerox Corporation; and vice president and general counsel of Xerox Data Systems. He began his legal career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.
Bob is a frequent speaker at American Bar Association and other professional seminars on a broad range of corporate litigation and corporate law department management issues. He is actively involved in the area of alternative dispute resolution as both an arbitrator and a mediator, and for many years has been a member of the Chicago Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR), a nationwide group devoted to alternative dispute resolution methods.
Bob is a past chairman of the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. He is also past president of The Legal Club of Chicago. He also served on the board of directors of Wien Air Alaska, Inc. He is a past co-chair of the ABA Litigation Section’s Corporate Counsel Committee, and during his tenure as a general counsel he was a member of the Business Law Section’s General Counsel Committee. Bob is also a member of the ABA Business Law Section’s Committee on Corporate Counsel and until recently, the Chicago Bar Association’s Corporate Law Departments Committee, where he served as vice chair. He is also the founder of the Chicago North Shore General Counsel Association, where he remains an active emeriti member. He is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Lastly, he was named in BTI Consulting Group’s 2005 Law Firm Client Service All-Star Team survey of Fortune 1000 clients, in recognition of his superior level of client service.
While attending law school, Bob was an editor of the Law Review. He currently serves as president of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Law School Foundation. Until recently, he served for many years as a member of the Board of Trustees of Coe College.
