Robert Cannuscio is a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, and the current chair of the Mechanical Patent Practice Team. His practice deals with all aspects of intellectual property law (patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and trade dress) with an emphasis on both domestic and foreign prosecution, opposition practice, litigation, technology licensing (including software licensing) and client counseling including IP portfolio development. Prior to joining Drinker Biddle, Robert was a shareholder at the intellectual property boutique firm of Seidel, Gonda, Lavorgna & Monaco, P.C.
Intellectual Property. Robert has extensive expertise in all areas of intellectual property law. He is actively involved in mentoring associates and monitoring changes in intellectual property law. Robert has spoken at numerous seminars and Robert spends considerable time counseling clients on how to protect their key technology and manage their portfolio. Clients look to him as one of their key advisors.
In addition to his legal background, Robert has an extensive background in various technologies. He has been involved in patent and licensing matters related to mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, material and system processing, manufacturing operations, medical devices and procedures, computer and Internet technologies, and the design and manufacture of aircraft structures, propulsion systems and flight controls.
Robert also has 10 years of hands-on engineering experience with Fairchild Republic Company working on fixed-wing military aircraft and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation working on both civilian and military helicopters.
In General. Robert earned his J.D. degree from Pace University School of Law in 1994. While at Pace, Robert was one of the founding members of the law school’s Intellectual Property Law Society. Robert earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York (Brooklyn Poly) in 1985, followed by a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1989. In 1989, Robert also became licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of New York.
Professional and Charitable Activities. Robert is active in many legal and professional associations including the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association, the Benjamin Franklin Inn of Court, the Armenian Bar Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Robert has recently completed his term on the Board of Governors for the Philadelphia Intellectual Property Law Association, and has been president of the Benjamin Franklin Inn of Court, a professional association of Intellectual Property attorneys in the Delaware region. Robert is also a past chair of the Armenian Bar Association, and was the co-chair and principal editor of the association's newsletter.
