Riley H. Ross III joined the firm as an associate from Miller Alfano & Raspanti. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2006, Riley has developed a broad litigation practice. He has experience in the areas of white collar criminal defense, criminal and civil health care fraud defense and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. Riley's litigation practice has allowed him to:
Represent the City of Philadelphia during state and federal investigations of a city organization;
Represent numerous witnesses appearing before a state grand jury;
Defend a corporation facing RICO charges stemming from private investments;
Represent doctors facing governmental investigations, overpayment demands and Medicare appeals;
Represent corporate executives facing federal inquires and investigations.
Before joining Miller Alfano, Riley was an Assistant Federal Public Defender representing indigent defendants on a wide variety of federal criminal matters including appeals. He managed his own trial teams while arguing and defending motions for trials on a daily basis in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. During that time, Riley represented Derrick Kimbrough and achieved the favorable sentence that is the subject of the recent landmark Supreme Court crack/powder disparity case, Kimbrough v. U.S., 128 S. Ct. 558 (2007).
Before serving in the Federal Defender's Office, Riley gained experience as an associate with Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, DC. Before joining the D.C. firm, Riley completed a one-year clerkship with the Honorable James C. Cacheris at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
