As co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer at MagneMotion, Dr. Richard Thornton contributes to the technical and business development of the company as well as the electro-magnetic designs of new products and processes. Dr. Thornton has more than forty years of experience as a professor and researcher in areas of magnetic levitation (maglev), linear motor propulsion, electro-mechanical systems and semiconductor devices. Prior to founding MagneMotion, Dr. Thornton was professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since 1988, Dr. Thornton has worked on new ideas for maglev transportation systems and created an interdepartmental MIT team that initiated long-term maglev research activities in all phases of maglev system design. Dr. Thornton is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and is an author or co-author of 15 patents, primarily in the fields of linear motors and maglev. Dr. Thornton earned his B.S. in electrical engineering from Princeton University and both his S.M. and Sc.D. in electrical engineering from MIT. |
