Richard Langhammer, Executive Vice-President, Generation Operations, is responsible for managing TransAlta’s thermal, geo-thermal, gas and hydro electricity generation facilities and three coal mines. He leads a team that is focused on the safe and efficient operation of TransAlta’s assets while ensuring the highest availability at the lowest cost.
Prior to this role, Mr. Langhammer was President, U.S. Operations, responsible for TransAlta’s U.S. operations including electricity generation facilities in Washington and New York states, coal mine operations in Washington and commercial, supplier, customer and stakeholder relationships across the United States.
Mr. Langhammer joined TransAlta in 1985, as Assistant Manager, Operations at one of TransAlta’s Alberta coal-fired facilities. After a two-year stint in Human Resources from 1989 to 1991, Mr. Langhammer moved to Ottawa as Plant Manager of TransAlta’s first gas-fired cogeneration facility. In 1995, Mr. Langhammer was promoted to Director, Plant Operations for Ontario, a position he held until 2000. In 2001, Mr. Langhammer returned to Calgary holding positions in increasing responsibility in Generation Operations before going to Washington state in 2003.
Mr. Langhammer has a bachelor of science from the University of Waterloo. He also has First Class Stationary Engineer’s Certificates in Alberta and Ontario.
