Richard G. Newman was elected a director of Southwest Water Company in 1991. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1956 from Bucknell University and an M.S. in Civil Engineering (in Hydraulics and Hydrology) in 1960 from Columbia University. He is a graduate of the Executive Management Program at UCLA.
In 1990 Mr. Newman led an AECOM Technology Corporation employee management buyout of a series of engineering, architecture and construction management companies formerly owned by Ashland. He is currently chairman, chief executive officer and a director of AECOM. AECOM, headquartered in Los Angeles, is a company with a total staff in excess of 12,500 employees, over $1.5 billion in revenues, and operates through several major architectural, engineering, design-build, construction/operations and maintenance management companies worldwide.
Prior to being president of Ashland Technology, in 1987 Mr. Newman served in various executive positions, including corporate vice president and/or president from 1977 to 1987 of Daniel, Mann, Johnson, & Mendenhall (DMJM), a world leader in transportation-related engineering services. In 1984 Ashland acquired DMJM.
From 1970 to 1977, Mr. Newman was President & COO, and then CEO of Genge, Inc. which was a 1,600-employee, American Stock Exchange-traded architectural and engineering firm.
From 1962 to 1970, Mr. Newman was executive vice president of Cahn Engineers, located in New Haven, Connecticut. Cahn employed 200 people and was acquired by Genge in 1971.
Mr. Newman serves on the board of 13 mutual funds managed by the Capital Research and Management Company, and on the Board of Southwest Water Company.
His professional business/memberships include: American Society of Civil Engineers; National Society of Professional Engineers; Chief Executives Organization (CEO); Executive Committee and Board of Directors of California Science Center, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Western Los Angeles County Council, Boy Scouts of America.
