Ramasamy Mannan, Ph.D., is an associate in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and concentrates his practice on intellectual property strategies, patent prosecution in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences and patent litigation.
Prior to joining McDermott, Ram worked at Pfizer, Inc. for ten years. His responsibilities included drafting and prosecuting patent applications, managing the biological product patent portfolio of Pfizer's Animal Health Division, IP strategic planning, licensing agreements, freedom to operate opinions, product clearance, review of academic alliances, corporate due diligence of IP assets and regulatory compliance. He was also in charge of the Veterinary Vaccine Formulation Laboratory responsible for manufacturing vaccines for clinical studies in North America, Europe and Australia. Additionally at Pfizer, he worked on technical transfer of biological products to U.S. and European manufacturing units.
Ram received his Ph.D. from Madurai Kamaraj University in India. He carried out his post-doctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. He has done extensive research in the areas of Biochemistry/Biophysics, Molecular Genetics, Gene Therapy, Immunology, Vaccines, Adjuvants, Virology, Cancer Biology, Biological Imaging, Plant Biology and Biological/Pharmaceutical Formulation development. He is the author or co-author of more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific publications and a laboratory manual.
During law school, Ram received an Academic Achievement Award and was a participant in the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition, Northeastern Region.
Ram has received numerous scientific recognitions, including the W.E.J. Upjohn Achievement Award from Pfizer Inc. (2004), the NIH - National Research Service Award (1994-95), the Young Scientist Award from Indian Science Congress Association (1989) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Outstanding Post-graduate Research from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (1986).
Ram is admitted to the Connecticut State Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
