Pieter Cox became the non-executive chairman of Sasol Limited on 1 January 2006. He was chief executive of Sasol until 30 June 2005 and became a non-executive director upon his retirement with effect from 1 October 2005. He joined Sasol in 1971 and was appointed a director of Sasol Limited in 1996, chief executive in 1997 and deputy chairman in 2001. In 1993 Mr. Cox was appointed managing director and CEO of Polifin Limited (now the Polymers division of Sasol Chemical Industries). He took on the role of chief operating officer in 1996, prior to being appointed chief executive a year later. Mr. Cox is still deputy chairman and a director of several other companies within Sasol. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering and metallurgical engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He attended the Executive Programme at Stanford Business School in the United States.
