After graduating from the UCLA School of Law in 1999, Phong L. Tran began his legal career as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Border Crimes Section for the Southern District of California. Mr. Tran later joined the San Diego City Attorney's Office and prosecuted various misdemeanor criminal matters as a member of the Drug Abatement Response Team. Thereafter, Mr. Tran became an associate with Coughlan, Semmer & Lipman, LLP, where he litigated white-collar criminal defense and legal malpractice matters. Mr. Tran has tried several felony and misdemeanor jury trials and has argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Tran joined the Firm as an associate in 2006. Mr. Tran's practice focuses on class action insurance and consumer fraud litigation. Mr. Tran is currently involved in prosecuting several nationwide class action lawsuits filed against a group of insurance companies for the deceptive marketing and sale of poor-performing deferred annuities to the elderly. One of these matters, Negrete v. Allianz Life Ins. Co. of North America, was recently certified by Judge Christina A. Snyder of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
Mr. Tran is a member of the San Diego County Bar Association, American Inns of Court - Louis M. Welsh Chapter, Association of Business Trial Lawyers, and Pan Asian Lawyers of San Diego. Mr. Tran was admitted to the California Bar in 1999 and is licensed to practice in all California state courts as well as the U.S. District courts for the Southern, Northern, and Central Districts of California.
