Philip Shearer became Group President, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. on January 1, 2003. He is responsible for Clinique and Origins on a worldwide basis and leads the Company’s online activities, including the Gloss.com joint venture with Chanel and Clarins. In January of 2005, he added responsibility for the Company’s prestige hair care business, including Aveda and Bumble and bumble.
Mr. Shearer joined The Estée Lauder Companies in September 2001 as Group President, International. In this role, he was responsible for sales and profits for the Company in all markets outside of North America and for all of the activities of its sales affiliates and distributor relationships worldwide. Under his leadership, the Company integrated all global marketing strategies in the international markets. He also oversaw the Company’s Travel Retail business.
From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Shearer was President of the Luxury Products Division at L’Oréal U.S.A., which encompasses Lancôme, Kiehl’s, Helena Rubinstein, Ralph Lauren Fragrances and Giorgio Armani Parfums. His many accomplishments in that role included the purchase of Kiehl’s and playing an instrumental role in The L’Oréal Group’s acquisition of the rights to market the Shu Uemura Cosmetics brand outside of Japan. Mr. Shearer joined L’Oréal in 1987 and served as Managing Director of L’Oréal’s Lancôme division in the United Kingdom from 1988 to 1992. He became President, Luxury Products Division, L’Oréal, in Japan in 1992, then served as General Manager of Lancôme in the United States from 1993 to 1997. He was named President of Lancôme in 1997.
Previously, Mr. Shearer held positions with the Elizabeth Arden division of Eli Lilly, which included leading its strategic planning department in New York City from 1986 to 1987, General Manager for Mexico from 1983 to 1986 and Director of Financial Planning and Director of Marketing, based in Paris, from 1980 to 1983.
Mr. Shearer was Chairman of the Board of The Fragrance Foundation from 1998 to 2001. He was born in Morocco and educated in France and the United States, and holds an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. He lives in New York City with his wife, Alix, and their three children. |
