As a kid growing up in New York City, Peter George loved to help his father build and fix things. Whether it was working on the family car or renovating the local church hall, George was at his side. Years later, this interest has grown into a career overseeing technical strategy and product development for a half-billion dollar organization.
With his father, an electrical engineer who designed and built control systems for the aerospace industry, as his primary role model, George knew early in life that he wanted to be in a creative profession. He followed his passion for building and creation to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science and engineering. It was at MIT that George decided on a career in software.
From college, George joined Digital Equipment Corporation, where he learned the real-world practice of creating, and leading teams that create, great software. He served as lead technologist for the VAX/VMS operating system and for Digital's workstation development. He was eventually promoted to director of storage software, responsible for establishing and rapidly growing Digital's storage management software products and business.
After nearly 17 years at Digital, George joined Kronos as vice president of software development in 1997, eventually being named senior vice president of engineering and chief technology officer.
Long considered a visionary in the technology industry, George strives to reconcile the unlimited potential of technology with the pragmatic practice of building great products. He encourages his team to make things happen by thinking about the "art of the possible." He also advises them to not only address the opportunity at hand, but to think and plan ahead for how their work today can set the stage for even greater success for Kronos in the future.
George introduced "agile" development into Kronos engineering. The process reflects many of his core values. Most importantly, the agile methodology reflects his strong belief that "building quality in from the start pays off every time." He encourages every engineering employee at Kronos to see each task through to the end, complete their work to the best of their ability, and only declare success when they are truly "done-done."
Among his many accomplishments at Kronos, George is credited with turning the engineering organization into a highly valued asset for the company. He is also credited with impacting the company's strategic direction, introducing Kronos' signature 100 percent web-based product line into the market and transforming Kronos' product set into a highly scalable and comprehensive integrated suite. He is also known at Kronos for his open, direct, honest, and hands-on management style.
In addition to his bachelor's and master's degrees, George also completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. In his free time, George plays and watches baseball and other sports with his family and reads and collects fine editions of books. |
