Paul Richard has been MeritCare's senior executive/general legal counsel since 1998. Some of his responsibilities in this position are managing the MeritCare Legal Department which involves supervising and performing legal services for MeritCare and its subsidiaries, and overseeing claims management for MeritCare's captive insurance program. His favorite things about his position are the great variety of issues addressed by the Legal Department each day and working with MeritCare associates to sort through the complex regulatory environment that is present in health care today.
Richard graduated from North Dakota State University, receiving an associate's degree in nursing and a bachelor of science degree in business economics. During college, Richard worked at St. Luke's Hospitals of Fargo as a file clerk in the Medical Record Department. After graduating from NDSU, he worked at St. Luke's as a registered nurse in a position that involved the peer review of patient care and utilization review.
Richard then went on to study at the University of North Dakota School of Law, where he received a Juris Doctor Degree. After graduation, he worked at the Serkland Law Firm in Fargo for almost 20 years before joining MeritCare as General Legal Counsel. While with the Serkland Law Firm, Richard represented MeritCare Health System in various legal matters.
Richard is involved in a variety of professional activities including the American Bar Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, the Cass County Bar Association, the State Bar Association of North Dakota and the Minnesota Bar Association. In his spare time, Richard enjoys spending time with his wife Mary Jo and their three children. |
