Paul Oliver spent most of the 2007 season waiting and watching, but the Chargers believe the second-year pro is ready to contribute to their secondary in 2008.
Oliver joined the Chargers in July of 2007 when they selected him in the fourth round of the NFL’s Supplemental Draft. As a rookie, he was inactive for all 16 regular-season games, but drew praise from the Chargers’ coaching staff for his work on the scout team, mimicking in practice the best defensive back the Bolts would be facing in the coming week. Oliver played cornerback throughout his career at Georgia, but the Chargers like his versatility and are exploring different ways they can use him in the defensive backfield.
Oliver became the first Charger selected in the supplemental draft since the team used a second-round pick in 1998 to take two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jamal Williams. |
