Paul attended the Essex County Massachusetts Agricultural and Technical Institute and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture of the University of Massachusetts. He began cooperative employment with New England Milk Producers Association in 1964, becoming Plant Manager of the Andover facility in 1968. With the formation of Yankee Milk, Paul served as Fluid Milk Sales Manager from 1973-1976 and was appointed General Manager of the cooperative in 1976. When Agri-Mark was formed in 1980, Paul was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the new cooperative.
Johnston's dairy industry participation includes service as a Director for the National Milk Producers Federation and Director and Executive Council Member for the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives and the U.S. Dairy Export Council.
