Paul M. Thompson is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Trial Department, focusing on white-collar criminal defense and appellate matters.
Prior to joining McDermott, Paul served as counsel to former Ohio Senator Mike DeWine on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. During his time with Senator DeWine, Paul served as lead counsel during the Senate confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, the reauthorization of the USA PATRIOT Act, the debate on the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and consideration of legislation on the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance program.
From 2002-2005, Paul served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Appellate Section of the United States Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has served as lead counsel on more than 80 criminal and civil cases before the United States Courts of Appeals, as well as dozens of matters before the United States District Courts. In 2004-2005, Paul acted as Ethics Advisor and Professional Responsibility Officer for his office. He also served as Acting Chief of the Appellate Section.
Before joining the United States Attorney's Office, Paul served as a law clerk to the Honorable D. Brooks Smith, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and spent two years at a litigation boutique in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Paul has published articles in the New England Law Review and Massachusetts Legal History.
He is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia.
