Paul G. Stern, Ph.D., was elected a director of Whirlpool Corporation in April 1990. He currently serves on the human resources committee and audit committee of the board of directors.
Stern is a partner in Thayer Capital Partners L.L.P., and Arlington Capital Partners, L.L.P., private investment companies. Prior to joining Thayer he was a special partner with Forstmann, Little & Company from 1993 through 1995. Stern was chairman of the board of Northern Telecom Limited, Mississauga, Ontario, from April, 1990 to July, 1993, where he also served as president and chief executive officer until March, 1993. He was elected to the board of directors of Northern Telecom in April 1988, and served as a consultant from May until his appointment as vice chairman and chief executive officer in March 1989.
Prior to joining Northern Telecom, Stern served as president of Unisys Corporation from May 1986 to December 1987. In January 1981, he joined Burroughs Corporation, which merged with Sperry Corporation to form Unisys, as executive vice president, engineering and manufacturing. He was elected president and chief operating officer, and a director in May 1982. He came to Burroughs from Rockwell International where he held the position of president, commercial electronics operations and corporate vice president, strategic management, as well as serving on the corporate management commit- tee. Before joining Rockwell, Stern held a number of senior management positions with IBM and Braun AG, a West German subsidiary of the Gillette Company.
Stern holds a bachelor's degree from Farleigh Dickinson University, master's degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and doctorate from University of Manchester (England).
He is a member of the boards of directors of Dow Chemical Company. He is a member of the boards of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Wharton School and is a trustee of the Library of Congress. He is also treasurer of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
