Paul E. Poirot is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department, where his practice focuses on patent litigation and licensing.
Paul has represented clients in patent litigation in various U.S. District Courts, in appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and in Section 337 Investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). His licensing practice includes licensing patents and patent portfolios in the telecommunications, digital media, power tool and semiconductor industries.
Paul has participated in patent litigation involving diverse technologies, such as satellite communications, lasers, semiconductor manufacturing, image processing and weapons ballistics. In addition, as a member of the Antitrust Practice Group, he represented clients before the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission during antitrust review of proposed mergers.
Paul spent two years in Tokyo as a member of the intellectual property group of a major Japanese electronics company, where he represented the company in licensing negotiations of one of the largest and most diverse patent portfolios in the world. In this capacity he completed license agreements with individual inventors and major corporations in fields such as memory products, telecommunications and home electronics. These negotiations of both limited one-way licenses and broad cross-licenses took place throughout eastern Asia, the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Paul also reviewed and helped to structure the company’s participation in innovative licensing schemes, such as the patent licensing pools managed by MPEG-LA and DVD 6C.
Paul holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He is admitted to practice in Illinois, Washington, D.C. and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
