Senator Paul D. Laxalt, during the course of his public service career, was a Senator, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, District Attorney, Presidential confidante, Republican Party leader and an internationally-respected political figure. As Governor of Nevada from 1967 to 1971, he improved relations between Federal law enforcement officials and Nevada’s gaming authorities, supported legislation that brought major corporations into the Nevada gaming industry, strengthened higher education throughout Nevada by helping to establish the community college system and the medical school, helped spearhead efforts to protect Lake Tahoe and expand the state park system, and developed an overall economic program that helped him leave his successor a budget surplus. As Governor and U.S. Senator (1974-1987), he worked closely with President Ronald Reagan and was National Chairman of all Reagan’s campaigns. He also served as General Chairman of the Republican Party from 1983 to 1987.
