Mr. Archibald joined Black & Decker as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Director in September 1985. When appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in March 1986 at the age of 42, Mr. Archibald was the youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He was elected to the additional post of Chairman in December 1986.
Prior to joining Black & Decker, Mr. Archibald held various management positions at Beatrice Companies, Inc. from 1977 to 1985, culminating with his appointment as corporate senior vice president and president of the Consumer Durables Group. During his tenure as president, the Consumer Durables Group became one of the fastest growing and most profitable segments of Beatrice.
Under Mr. Archibald’s leadership, Black & Decker’s sales have increased from $1.7 billion in 1985 to over $6.5 billion in 2005, and the Corporation has become noted for its new-product development success, marketing expertise, and strong customer partnerships.
Mr. Archibald is a member of the board of directors of Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT), Brunswick Corporation (NYSE:BC), and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN). He is a recipient of the American Marketing Association’s Edison Achievement Award for significant and lasting contributions to marketing excellence and product innovation. He has been cited by Business Week as one of the top six managers in U.S. business and by Fortune as one of the country’s ten most wanted executives.
An All-American basketball player in college, Mr. Archibald is a graduate of Weber State University in Utah and holds an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business. |
