Newton J. Chu
is the resident director in the firm's Hawaii Island office in Hilo and practices in the areas of corporate, labor, liquor licensing, immigration, I-9 compliance, and general business law matters.
Mr. Chu's practice includes general business/commercial law, labor/employment law, liquor licensing matters and Immigration Law. Mr. Chu serves as counsel for numerous closely held companies, both large and small. He also counsels many human resource departments of some of the largest employers in the state. Mr. Chu is a frequent lecturer at numerous business seminars and organizations throughout the state on various topics concerning immigration and employment law, including discrimination and sexual harassment, workplace violence, I-9 compliance. He has co-authored "The Chamber Desk Manual, Labor and Employment Law for the Hawaii Employer.
In the area of Federal Immigration Law, Mr. Chu serves as the firm's specialist. With over 20 years of experience, he counsels universities, companies, scientific institutes, hotels and individuals on non-immigrant working visas, immigrant visas, and related immigration matters. He is currently the Chair of the Hawaii Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and has published numerous articles on employment related immigration issues. He has spoken nationally on behalf of AILA.
Mr. Chu is a member of the Hawaii Bar, the California Bar, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Court in both California and Hawaii. He serves as an Officer and Director for numerous civic and charitable organizations. He is Past-President of the Rotary Club of Hilo, Past President of the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Director of the Hawaii Island United Way, and Director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Big Island. He is also an active member of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). |
