Nelson has extensive academic center revenue cycle transformation experience as well as experience in change management associated new system implementation.
Professional Experience
Prior to joining Huron Nelson was a Senior Vice President in the Revenue Cycle practice of Wellspring Partners now a Huron Consulting Group Practice.
Previously he was a Senior Manager in KPMG's Health Care Revenue Cycle practice. Nelson led PricewaterhouseCoopers' Revenue Cycle consulting practice in the Southeast and was co-leader of Navigant Consulting's National Revenue Cycle practice.
Representative examples of Nelson's engagement experience include:
Led several comprehensive revenue management process improvement engagements across the Southeast including the redesign of revenue cycle processes at two major academic medical centers. Implemented significant changes in all aspects of revenue control including patient access charge capture and traditional business office processes.
Led all accounts receivable inventory management activities related to Medicare and Blue Cross payer for a 900-bed inner-city academic medical center and related Level 1 trauma center. Responsibilities included performance goal setting team development and management and IT design and coordination. Examples of projects and results include:
Led the billing collection and denial management team tasked with the collection of a rolling inventory of approximately $350M in Medicare and BlueCross accounts receivable for the hospital. Reduced days in accounts receivable and boosted cash collections over a starting point baseline by 30%. Managed a delivery staff of 40 team members at his departure.
Led the revenue cycle selection process design and implementation of an enterprise wide health information system. Managed the team that implemented the revenue cycle functionality related to a new McKesson STAR platform NDC Premis billing system and Ontario System FACS enabling AR management systems.
Coordinated combined client/external consulting revenue cycle teams through assessment purchase and integration of a three hospital acquisition encompassing 20 hospitals and four health plans. Also coordinated comprehensive implementation strategies for many revenue management computer systems.
