Nancy has more than 16 years of consulting experience working with legal organizations including corporate legal departments private law firms and government legal agencies in the areas of organizational structure cost containment outside counsel management process improvement and strategic technology utilization.
Professional Experience
Prior to joining Huron Nancy was with Navigant Consulting Inc. and Arthur Andersen LLP focused in Legal Business Consulting and Intellectual Asset Management. Representative examples of Nancy's engagements experience include:
Designed and conducted a comprehensive benchmark survey for an international software development company focused on outside counsel management and cost containment practices in large law departments. The study included a tabulated survey and supplemental interviews with selected companies. Results and recommendations were used to direct development of internal programs to manage and reduce the legal spend.
Led an effort to analyze the law department for a major P&C insurance company to understand the current operations align the department with the corporate strategy and identify cost saving opportunities. Resulting recommendations focused on organizational structure changes more rigorous management of outside counsel newly developed risk management processes and improved technology utilization.
Conducted a review of outside counsel invoices relating to a complex and lengthy arbitration of a regional insurance company. The review was conducted to determine appropriate-ness of fees and expenses. Results of the analysis were used to develop an alternative fee arrangement for the remainder of the arbitration and new outside counsel billing guidelines were developed for use with all outside counsel.
Facilitated the client team of a law department of an international consulting firm to develop a new organizational design and lawyer career progression.
Conducted an assessment of the use of outside counsel and compliance with billing guidelines for an international professional services firm. Results of the assessment documented potential savings of 10%- 15% in outside counsel fees and expenses.
Led the development of a Notes-based system for a Fortune 50 chemical company to house "best in class" knowledge capital of primary law firms and support redesigned work flow between in-house counsel national counsel and local counsel. As a member of the Task Force Nancy provided guidance on technical feasibility end user acceptance training requirements and potential for return on investment. The project included development of policies and procedures for usage as well as compliance testing for adherence to standards.
Developed a technology and change management plan to a major P&C insurance company's staff counsel operations which included revised work processes leveraging commonalties among offices and organization-wide management reporting. Also considered in the plan was integration with other corporate departments such as claims processing and litigation management.
Developed a strategic technology plan that addressed the underlying technical infrastructure as well as practice support applications and client communications for an international law firm. As a follow-on project Nancy then conducted a national-wide search for a Chief Information Officer to implement the strategic plan.
