Miles W. Hughes is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and a member of the Firm’s Restructuring and Insolvency Group. He concentrates his practice in the areas of financial restructuring and bankruptcy, as well as negotiating and documenting distressed asset dispositions, municipal bond financings, and commercial credit transactions. Although his practice is primarily transactional in nature, Miles also regularly represents debtors and creditors in adversary proceedings and advises corporate trustees and directors on their fiduciary duties.
Prior to joining McDermott, Miles was an attorney in the health law practice group of a Detroit-based law firm and a Florida law firm. He has extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry. Miles’ unique focus on both health law and bankruptcy law has enabled him to excel in the representation of distressed healthcare organizations and their lenders and investors in complex regulated transactions.
Miles served as a judicial attorney for Justice Ben F. Overton (Ret.) of the Florida Supreme Court. He is a member of the trial bars of the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern District of Michigan, and Northern and Southern Districts of Florida. Miles is admitted to practice before all state courts in Illinois, Michigan and Florida.

Represented the surviving system in $300 million affiliation of non-profit hospital systems in Washington
Represented the secured bond insurer in $400 million restructuring of special facility bonds in chapter 11 reorganization of Delta Air Lines
Represented the senior secured lender in chapter 11 liquidation of community hospital system in Birmingham, Alabama
Represented the seller in a $35 million sale of continuing care retirement community in Southbury, Connecticut
Represented the secured creditor in $150 million foreclosure sale of a fleet of Boeing 757s in chapter 11 reorganization of ATA Airlines
