Miles L. Marsh was elected a director of Whirlpool Corporation in 1990. He serves on the human resources committee , corporate governance & nominating committee and presiding director of the board of directors.
Marsh resigned as chairman of the board and CEO of Fort James Corporation in 2000. He had served in that position since August 1997. He was named president and chief executive officer of James River Corporation, Richmond, Va., in October 1995, and assumed the added position of Chairman in January 1996. In October 1997, James River Corp. merged with Fort Howard Corporation and Marsh became chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Fort James Corporation at that time. Prior to assuming his position with James River, he served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Pet Incorporated from March of 1991 when the company was restructured from a division of Whitman Corporation into an independent corporation until its acquisition by British conglomerate Grand Metropolitan PLC in 1995. Marsh also served as president and chief operating officer of Whitman Corporation, a position he had held since late 1989. Earlier experience included five years with McKinsey and Company before becoming vice president and chief financial officer for the Consumer Products Group of Dart and Kraft in 1981. He was subsequently elected executive vice president and chief financial officer of Kraft, Inc. in 1984; president of Kraft International in 1985; president of the Operations and Technology Group in 1988 and president of General Foods USA in 1989.
A native of South Africa, Marsh holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Cape Town and a doctorate from Northwestern University. He is a member of the boards of GATX Corporation, and Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter & Co., Evanston Hospital, and is a member of the advisory board of Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
