Mike Splain, a Sun Fellow, has been with Sun for 17 years. He is currently Sun's Chief Engineer and the Chief Technologist forthe Systems Group at Sun Microsystems As the chief technologist, Mike strongly influences thetechnology, product, and operational strategies and tactics of the group. He works with other parts of Sun to coordinate and align these strategies with other product groups within Sun. Mike is a member of Sun's Technology and Architecture Council where he represents the group on a wide variety of technology topics. Mike also serves as a valuable Sun wide resource to assist in the understanding and resolution of complex technical problems.
Prior to his current role, Mike was a Sun Fellow and Distinguished Engineer in the Processor and Network Products, Microelectronics, and Computer Systems groups. In Microelectronics, he participated in the verification of validation of the SuperSPARC-I/II and UltraSPARC-I/II/III/IV microprocessors. While a member of the Computer Systems Group, he helped lead the design, validation, and debug of some of Sun's first initial server product offerings: the Sun 490, Sun 690, SS10, SC1000, and SC2000. In addition to his technical roles, Mike also held a number of management positions including head of development for the MAJC architecture and microprocessors.
Mike joined Sun in 1988 as a staff engineer. Previously, he was a member of technical staff at Ridge Computers, Vitesse Semiconductor, Encore Computer, and Digital Equipment Corporation where he served in a variety of technical positions related to the development of microprocessors and high-end computer systems.
Mike received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and an MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Connecticut.
