After 27 years with the company, Mr. O’Brien officially retired from Suncor in June 2002. However, he continues to be a part of the Suncor family with his appointment to Suncor's Board of Directors in April 2002. He is a member of the audit committee and the environment, health and safety committee.
In his many years with Suncor, he held a number of senior management positions, including executive vice president, corporate development and chief financial officer. From 1992 to 2000, Mr. O'Brien was executive vice president of Suncor's wholly-owned subsidiary, Suncor Energy Products Inc. (formerly Sunoco Inc.). In addition, he held various senior-level positions in planning, business development, marketing and finance.
Mr. O’Brien serves as a board member for several organizations, including PrimeWest Energy Inc. and Shaw Communications Inc. As well, he is past chair of the board of trustees for Nature Conservancy of Canada, past chair of Canadian Petroleum Products Institute and past chair of Canada's Voluntary Challenge for Global Climate Change.
Born in Toronto, Mr. O’Brien holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toronto and a master's of business administration from York University.
He and his wife have four children.
