Midwest Electric has one of the strongest safety records among electrical contractors industrywide, and helping to keep safety a top priority at all levels of the company is Mike Lewis, safety director. In his position, Mike is responsible for overseeing and establishing safety programs and procedures at the company. Most recently he chaired the employee safety committee that is developing and implementing a Behavioral Based Safety (BBS) program throughout all divisions of Midwest Electric.A BBS environment involves a peer-to-peer system where employees take a proactive role in safety operations. They monitor themselves, define unsafe behavior and develop their own observation checklists for audits. Commonplace in large corporations, BBS programs are rare among electrical contractors, such as Midwest Electric.Mike joined Midwest Electric in 2004 after spending many years in the propane industry. There he underwent considerable training in hazardous material handling and transporting, and even taught courses. He has received continuing education through the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).The father of two daughters and a son, Mike enjoys hunting, golf, motorcycles and riding four-wheelers. An avid horseman, he and his wife run a horse stable, housing about 60 horses. |
