I started working at KGMB9 behind the camera-way behind the camera, as a video editor in 2002. Two years later, I slowly started making my way to the other side and became a photographer. I shot a variety of different news stories and a lot of sports, primarily UH football. In 2006, I was really able to start focusing more on my passion-sports-when I began working as a photographer for the June Jones Show on KGMB9.
With the help of Steve Uyehara and editor, John Allen, I earned an Emmy for my camera work on the June Jones Show. (I didn't make it to the ceremony in California, but I certainly would have thanked my mom if I had!)
After spending five years behind the scenes, I was promoted to "sports dude" in August of 2007. Sure I had to get a hair cut and start dressing- up for work, but it's a dream come true. I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and a life-long obsession of sports. My favorite sports teams include the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Yankees and, of course, the UH Warriors.
When I'm not on the anchor desk, I'm still out shooting video for KGMB9 News. In my free time, I head home to Maui to spend time with my family and childhood friends.
Mike Cherry is KGMB9's weekend Sports anchor. His sports reports air weekends on KGMB9 News at 5 and 10. Mike has been with KGMB9 since 2002. |
