Michael Buenzow is a senior managing director and the Midwest region leader for FTI's Corporate Finance practice and is based in Chicago. Mr. Buenzow has more than 20 years of experience serving as a financial advisor to corporations, creditors, equity sponsors and directors of underperforming companies. He specializes in operational turnarounds, interim management and business reorganization.
Mr. Buenzow has extensive operational turnaround experience and has a strong background in finance, manufacturing, plant consolidation, consumer products, China sourcing, brand management, store operations, revenue enhancement, working capital management and product licensing agreements. He has worked in a broad range of industries, including steel, retail, automotive, furniture, grocery, transportation, paper and distribution.
Mr. Buenzow's experience includes serving as chief executive officer of WCI Steel, Inc., Huffy Bicycle Corporation and Tommy Armour Golf Company. He also recently led the operational turnaround activities during a two year assignment as the chief executive officer of Bush Industries, a $350 million diversified furniture manufacturer that is a leading supplier to major "Big Box" retailers. He led efforts to create Bush's China based sourcing group and was the 2005 recipient of the "Large Company Turnaround of the Year" award from the Chicago Turnaround Management Association for his accomplishments at Bush.
He served as financial advisor to a $750 million Tier I automotive supplier with operations in North America, Europe and Asia. Mr. Buenzow also served as the chief restructuring officer of Heating Oil Partners LP, the country's second largest distributor of home heating oil and other refined petroleum products. He led all operational and financial restructuring activities, including business plan development, cost reductions, acquisition due diligence, business divestitures, fixed asset sales and placement of a new $150 million credit facility.
Prior to joining FTI, Mr. Buenzow spent 13 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he was a partner in the Business Recovery Services practice. From 1996 through 2001, he performed many operational improvement and business turnaround projects for Kmart.
Mr. Buenzow holds an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a B.B.A. from Niagara University. He is a certified turnaround professional and a certified insolvency restructuring advisor. Mr. Buenzow has extensive international and public company experience and is a member of the boards of directors of Huffy Bicycle / Tommy Armour Golf and HOP Energy, LLC.
