Mike Smith has led the Business Planning & Development (BPD) Group at BAE Systems Land & Armaments, Ground Systems (GS) as the group director since November 2006, with responsibility for the Division's mergers and acquisitions strategy, planning, and execution, business development (BD) and intelligence, and competition management.
The BPD Group is responsible for execution of three of BAE Systems' five core business processes: Integrated Business Planning (IBP), Mergers, Acquisitions & Disposals, and Lifecycle Management (LCM) - Business Winning. In addition to this, Mike is responsible for the strategic content of the Quarterly Business Reviews (QBR), Monthly Management Reports (MMR), Discretionary Spending (marketing and new business acquisition expense
(NBAE)), Technology Management (Independent Research & Development (IR&D) and BD synchronization), and GS' legislative strategy. His focus has been on establishing the means to integrate each of these business functions such that their execution is aligned with the company's long-term growth strategy and near-term financial objectives.
Mike joined BAE Systems in 2005 as the Manager of Acquisition Strategy in GS' York, PA headquarters. In 2006, he accepted the BPD directorship and has been aggressively infusing BAE Systems' (and industry) best practices since his appointment. Before joining the Company, he held a number of leadership positions in the Risk Management Services business group at Marsh & McLennan Company (MMC) in Philadelphia, PA, Wilmington, DE, and New York, NY. Prior to his professional career at MMC, Mike was a nuclear-trained officer in the U.S. Navy with tours in reactor controls and communications (TS/SCI clearance). Mike holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master's degree in Engineering Management both from Stanford University
