Michael F. Anthony is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in its Chicago office. Michael is the head of the Firm's international Health Law Department, a position he previously held from 1991 to 2001. He is the former senior vice president for Legal Affairs at the American Hospital Association. He also worked in various administrative capacities at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, including as the administrator for the Henry Phipps Psychiatric Clinic.
Michael has served as counsel in connection with a number of projects including provider affiliations, integrated delivery system development, formation of HMOs and PPOs, health care mergers, acquisitions and affiliations, various joint ventures, joint operating arrangements, reimbursement systems, medical staff matters, Catholic/non-Catholic transactions, medical group representation and other legal and policy issues.
Michael has published a number of articles in health care journals and has frequently served as a faculty member in various programs. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Past President of the American Health Lawyers Association and recipient of AHLA's David J. Greenburg Award. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America (since 1992), Chambers USA: America's Leading lawyers for Business, and as one of Nightingale's Healthcare News' "Outstanding Hospital Lawyers - 2005." Michael was also named a 2008 Illinois Super Lawyer by Law & Politics.
Representative Experience
Served as transaction counsel on behalf of St. David's Health System in its combination with local Columbia/HCA facilities in a complex partnership arrangement
Assisted in establishing scores of provider organizations consisting of hospitals, physicians and other health care service entities for the provision of contract services to beneficiaries of various payors
Assisted four religious congregations in the formation of a health maintenance organization and preferred provider organization arrangement to serve the Midwest
Assisted in the creation of several joint operating entities, including Alegent Health in Omaha, Nebraska
