Michael F. Kelleher is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, resident in its Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Firm’s Tax Department. Michael’s practice focuses on the representation of corporate taxpayers on complex federal income tax controversies, transfer pricing and insurance tax matters.
In the tax controversy area, Michael represents clients in pre-audit planning, in audits, before the IRS Appeals Office and in litigation. In addition to assisting in developing substantive arguments, this process involves devising procedural tactics and strategies, protecting privileges, dealing with IRS document requests and summonses, interviewing potential witnesses, and identifying and retaining experts. He has represented clients in the U.S. Tax Court, the Court of Federal Claims and in various district courts and courts of appeals.
On transfer pricing and insurance tax matters, Michael is involved in the planning process, as well as in representing clients in tax controversies. He has also assisted clients in competent authority matters and in obtaining Advance Pricing Agreements in the United States and in several non- U.S. jurisdictions.
At Georgetown law school, Michael was Managing Editor of Law & Policy in International Business. He began his career as law clerk to the Honorable William B. Jones, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
