Michael D. Switzer is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and concentrates his practice on litigation, licensing and client counseling.
Michael has litigated numerous cases before the federal courts and the United States International Trade Commission. His litigation practice has involved divergent technologies such as medical devices, RAID storage devices, facsimile machines, analog and digital circuit designs and semiconductor processes.
Michael rejoined the Firm in June of 2007 after spending two years as a senior patent counsel for a leading medical device company.
Michael joined the Firm as first year in 1996. From 1997 to 1999, through a Firm arranged secondment, Michael became the first in-house U.S. patent counsel for Firm client Hitachi, Ltd. While with Hitachi, Ltd., Michael was based in Tokyo, Japan and concentrated on licensing and litigation management, participating in the negotiation and drafting of numerous IP agreements. Upon his return from Japan, Michael was based in the Firm's D.C. office from 1999 until 2005. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Michael was a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1990 to 1995.
He received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
Michael is admitted to practice in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Connecticut. He is also registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
