Michael A. Messina is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Washington, D.C. office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department, where his practice focuses on patent matters in the electrical and mechanical fields, including counseling clients and prosecuting patent applications in the United States and abroad.
Michael has substantial experience in managing clients’ patent portfolios in a cost-effective manner, acting as their in-house counsel, to help them protect new products, avoid potential infringement problems and exploit and protect their intellectual property.
Michael has extensive experience writing and prosecuting utility and design patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including appeals, ex parte reexaminations and inter partes reexaminations. He has prepared clearance and advisory opinions regarding patent infringement and validity. He has also prepared technology license agreements and settlement agreements.
Michael has counseled U.S. and international clients in divergent technologies, including semiconductor device manufacturing, testing and inspection, computer hardware such as disk drives and motors, telecommunications and data processing software and automotive diagnostic electronics. He has also counseled clients extensively in the field of advanced medical devices, such as health monitoring systems, spinal implants, hemodialysis catheters, cardiovascular catheters and stents. In addition, he has extensive and varied experience in the mechanical arts, including automotive technology, razors, anti-counterfeiting technology, metal building systems, plastic molding and aircraft internal structural systems.
Prior to practicing law, Michael was a development engineer at AT&T, where he worked on semiconductor manufacturing techniques including wire bonding, plastic and ceramic packaging, circuit board assembly and various device testing methodologies for high density memories and for microprocessors.
Michael received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the bars of New York and the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
