Melissa Barrett practices consumer and mortgage lending law. Ms. Barrett is experienced in regulatory issues regarding residential mortgage loan transactions and in negotiating and documenting bulk purchases and sales of mortgage loans. In addition, she has analyzed and resolved issues related to loan servicing and default management. Ms. Barrett is also experienced with the development and documentation of home equity loans and other retail banking products. Ms. Barrett advises mortgage and consumer finance companies on all aspects of licensing and examination issues, drafts and reviews disclosures and advises clients on the applicability of federal and state regulations to their consumer and mortgage lending businesses. She has conducted due diligence reviews in connection with proposed acquisitions and IPOs, performed regulatory compliance audits, drafted contracts for content providers and other business partners of Internet mortgage originators, as well as other matters. Professional Activities Ms. Barrett is the immediate past president of Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, a nonprofit organization that helps homeless people with employment, housing and other issues. She has served on its Board of Directors since 1991 and was president from 1997-1999. Ms. Barrett is also Senior Warden of St. Thomas' Parish, Dupont Circle. Professional Experience Prior to joining Buckley Kolar, Ms. Barrett was a counsel with Goodwin Procter and, before that, Negroni & Kromer. Publications/Presentations Ms. Barrett was Associate Editor for The Tax Lawyer at Georgetown University Law Center from 1979-1982. |
