Melanie M. Platt currently serves as senior vice president of human resources and president of the AGL Resources Foundation. Platt has executive responsibility over AGL Resources' human resources function and provides strategic direction for corporate philanthropy, community affairs, and employee volunteer services.
She joined the company in 1995 as vice president and corporate secretary of AGL Resources. She has also served as vice president of investor relations for the company. In October 2000, Platt was named senior vice president and appointed to lead the company's business support efforts. She has also served as vice president of investor relations for the company. Platt has a combination of utility and legal experience. Prior to joining AGL Resources, she practiced law for 10 years with McKenna Long Aldridge (formerly Long, Aldridge & Norman). During her tenure, she worked closely with AGL Resources in the areas of corporate finance and securities.
Platt graduated with high honors from Emory University with an art history degree and continued her postgraduate education at Emory to earn her juris doctor degree from Emory University School of Law. Currently she is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the American Bar Association.
Platt is active in community and volunteer organizations. As chair of the AGL Resources Foundation, she also oversees the company's corporate giving strategy, focusing its efforts on programs and activities that benefit the communities in which AGL Resources operates. Her civic and professional memberships include serving on the boards of the Metro Atlanta YMCA, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, and Central Atlanta Progress. She also serves on the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts and Culture Coalition and is vice chair of the board of trustees for her church, Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church.
