Maura practices in the litigation group, where her focus is on antitrust and trade regulation, municipal civil rights defense, employment, probate and complex commercial litigation. Her experience encompasses all aspects of litigation, including pretrial discovery, depositions, trial experience in both Ohio and federal courts, and appellate briefing and argument in Ohio Courts of Appeals and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Maura’s work in the area of antitrust and trade regulation has included both litigation and client counseling on the Sherman Act and Robinson-Patman Act, as well as state dealer protection statutes. She has represented municipalities and private clients, with substantial experience in successfully defending employment-related litigation, including claims of wrongful discharge and discrimination. Maura’s noted experience includes serving as second-chair trial counsel in a three-month antitrust trial involving an alleged Sherman Act conspiracy; representing a public utility in an antitrust case challenging an agreement as an unreasonable restraint of trade; obtaining summary judgment, and successfully defending the appeal, for a national retailer accused of breach of contract related to a multi-million dollar real estate acquisition; and obtaining summary judgment for Ohio cities in several civil rights cases implicating First, Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights. In the labor and employment context, Maura’s experience includes obtaining summary judgment on behalf of employers in federal actions alleging employment discrimination on the basis of race. She has successfully defended an employer in a state court wrongful death action alleging negligence and intentional tort brought by the family of an employee killed on the job. Maura also negotiated a consent decree and settlement on behalf of an Ohio city accused of sexual harassment within a city department and assisted the city in instituting an investigation and disciplinary measures against responsible employees. Maura has taught appellate advocacy as an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve School of Law for several years, and also taught Lawyering Theory and Practice as an adjunct professor at Arizona State University College of Law. She has spoken at seminars on the national, state and local levels on the topics of antitrust litigation and municipal liability. In 2002, Maura was named as a fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation. Maura served as a law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Ann Aldrich of the Northern District of Ohio before joining Calfee in 1994. In 1999, she was awarded a Pegasus Scholarship by the American Inns of Court and spent three months at the Inns of Court in London, England. Maura became a partner at Calfee in 2003. |
