Matt joined Pierce Atwood LLP in 2007 as Counsel in the firm's Retail Financial Services Practice Group. Prior to joining Pierce Atwood, Matt was Associate General Counsel for the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, a $5+ billion student loan company, where he was responsible for all legal affairs affecting the Authority including consumer, commercial and public finance, regulatory compliance, corporate, employment, regulatory, litigation, operational and general business matters. From 1999-2004, Matt was an associate with the law firm of Thompson Coburn LLP. From 1989-1999, Matt was Assistant Vice President, Audit and Compliance Officer at Mercantile Bancorporation, a $12 billion regional financial institution. Matt has over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. His practice is focused on advising banks and other financial institutions in connection with regulatory, compliance, deposit and lending matters. Matt has represented banks and savings associations and their holding companies in connection with regulatory filings as well as the sale of banks and savings associations, the establishment of nonbanking businesses and has worked on behalf of financial institutions with State and Federal regulators on many issues, including the limits of banking powers and the resolution of supervisory and enforcement matters. In addition, Matt has frequently spoken on a number of federal laws affecting banks and financial institutions such as the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Bank Secrecy Act and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act and is also well-versed in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (formerly known as the federal guaranteed student loan program). Education Matt received his J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law (1999) and his undergraduate degree in English, magna cum laude, from Webster University in 1988.
