Matt is a partner in the firm’s litigation department and has been with Casner & Edwards, LLP since 2000. His litigation practice is wide-ranging. He is an experienced business, employment and professional malpractice claim litigator and counselor, who has practiced for more than ten years in these fields. Among other honors, he has been selected by his peers as a "Rising Star for the years 2006 and 2007. Practice Matt has years of complex litigation practice at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts. His cases include: contract disputes, non-compete/non-solicitation agreements, employment, franchisor-franchisee, product liability, construction, medical malpractice, negligent security, motor vehicle tort, premises, bad faith and insurance coverage matters. Matt also concentrates in the defense of non-medical professionals (lawyers, insurance agents, real estate brokers, security guards, construction professionals) against claims of malpractice and improper employment practices before state and federal trial courts and administrative agencies. Matt provides counseling in risk management services and assists with the drafting of severance agreements, termination letters and claim releases. Matt also counsels both corporate/business and individual clients concerning employment, contract and general business negotiations and matters. In addition to his litigation practice, Matt also practices in the area of real estate transactions, representing parties in the sale or purchase of real property. Matt was part the firm's trial team that successfully enforced a restrictive post-termination covenant not to compete against a former franchisee, an issue of first impression in Massachusetts. The matter was appealed, briefed and argued to the Supreme Judicial Court, which upheld the trial court's judgment in favor of the firm's client. The matter was appealed by the former franchisee to the United Supreme Court, which, after reviewing the briefs submitted by the parties, declined to hear the case. Lead counsel for real estate brokerage firm in defense of tort claims in a number of trials and proceedings, yielding defense verdicts. Trial counsel for national franchisor. Matt was part of a trial team that obtained a jury verdict, defending his client from an aggrieved employee's claim of termination in violation of public policy. Lead counsel for national brokerage house in breach of contract action, whereby he successfully enforced a realty brokerage agreement in arbitration.
