Matthew Gryzlo Biography :

Matthew Gryzlo is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Chicago office. Matthew is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and focuses his practice on domestic and international patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition and other related causes, including client counseling, portfolio management, licensing, transactions and litigation.

Prior to join McDermott, Matthew practiced in a full-service intellectual property law firm. Matthew's primary focus areas are litigation and intellectual property acquisition and portfolio management, including patent and trademark prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

On the litigation side, Matthew has litigated patent infringement, trademark infringement, copyright infringement, trade secret, unfair competition, and false advertising actions in federal and state courts. Matthew has actively participated in all aspects of the litigation and trial process including taking and defending depositions, conducting fact and expert discovery, briefing and arguing substantive motions, and participating in trial preparation and proceedings. Matthew has also been involved in trademark cancellation and opposition proceedings. In addition to litigation, Matthew has crafted licensing strategies and other business solutions to resolve contested matters without the need for litigation.

Matthew's prosecution experience includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications and appeals primarily in the mechanical, electrical, computer software and business method arts. He has prosecuted patents in technologies including packaging machinery, industrial transportation equipment, machine tools, food packaging equipment and methods, medical/dental/surgical devices, drug reconstitution devices, medical solution containers, beverage containers and systems, industrial doors, window components, barbecue grills, circuit protection devices, automotive blade fuses, electrical switches, RFID devices, smart cards, transformers, microphones, hearing aids, temperature sensing devices, disposable paper goods, paper printing and processing methods, e-commerce, business methods, software applications, financial products, electronic database interfaces and software interfaces.

Matthew is also experienced in preparing ex parte patent appeal briefs and conducting reexamination proceedings before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.

Matthew's practice also includes IP asset management. In particular he has experience in performing due diligence investigations and analyses in connection with the purchases of businesses. This practice also includes preparing and reviewing license agreements, technology transfer agreements, joint development agreements and confidentiality agreements. Matthew also has extensive experience in opinion work.

Prior to private practice, Matthew worked as a design engineer in the packaging and material handling industries where he designed high-speed packaging machines. Before entering the packaging industry, Matthew worked in the cellular phone/electronics industry. Matthew also assisted in setting up and operating the CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) Laboratory for the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, where he was responsible for implementing robotic assembly cells and CNC machining cells.

Matthew received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering form the University of Illinois. While in law school, he was the staff editor of the John Marshall Law Review, a member of Phi Delta Phi legal society, and received the honor of Order of John Marshall.

Matthew's professional affiliations include the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC) and the Chicago Bar Association - Intellectual Property Law Section. Matthew volunteer's his time helping the Greater Chicago Food Depository and as a youth baseball coach.

Matthew is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and various other district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is also registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
