Matthew F. Weil is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Orange County office. Matt is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department and focuses his practice on complex patent litigation and counseling.
Matt has been successfully involved in all aspects of litigation from initial case development to appeal, involving technologies running the gamut from electronics (Flash memory, MP3 players, plasma televisions color scanners, font generation circuitry) to mechanical devices and products (products used in semiconductor manufacturing, softball bats, explosives for the mining industry) to medical and biotechnology (cardiac stents, peptides for mediating cell surface adhesion). Matt has also been involved in trademark and trade dress cases involving famous trademarks and product configurations and the use of trademarks in domain names.
Before joining the Firm, from 1992 to 2000, Matt practiced intellectual property law in San Francisco and Newport Beach. From 1991 to 1992, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mary M. Schroeder, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Phoenix, Arizona.
Matt is a member of the California bar. He is admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of California.
Matt actively publishes in the area of patent law and Federal Circuit jurisprudence, co-authoring articles in the Santa Clara Law Review, the Berkeley High Technology Law Journal, and the Journal of the Patent & Trademark Office Society, among others. Matt has also served on the Board of Directors for the Orange County Patent Law Association, the Board of Editors of the American Intellectual Property Law Association's AIPLA Quarterly Journal and on the Advisory Board of the Whittier Law School Center for Intellectual Property Law.
