Experience:
Matt Rooney is a litigator with extensive trial experience in both jury and bench trials in major civil cases. As a result, he has been a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers for the past 10 years. He also represents clients involved in alternative dispute resolutions and has an extensive background in settlement negotiations.
Matt also counsels clients concerning litigation problems and issues. That work includes significant experience in several major cases involving electronic discovery and in proactively developing programs for clients to deal with the impact of electronic documents in litigation. He is a member of the firm's Electronic Discovery and Records Management Practice. Matt has headed up several engagements in which he has assisted clients in developing procedures to meet the stringent demands imposed on them by the production of electronic documents in litigation.
As part of a wide-ranging commercial and corporate litigation practice, Matt represents major corporations, commercial banks and other business enterprises in federal and state court litigation. Disputes on which he advises include environmental litigation, contract disputes, nuclear plant construction, bankruptcy litigation, non-competition agreements, letter-of-credit litigation, and Uniform Commercial Code matters.
Matt has 30 years of experience (including extensive trial experience) in significant antitrust cases in federal and state courts for clients in the pharmaceuticals, sports, nuclear, and steel industries. It includes lead responsibility for defense groups litigating and resolving antitrust matters. His antitrust work also encompasses substantial experience counseling clients on both Sherman Act and Clayton Act issues.
In the area of securities litigation, Matt has 25 years of experience in major securities cases under both the 1933 and 1934 Acts, on behalf of clients in the accounting, telecommunications, energy and packaging industries. He also handles corporate acquisition and takeover litigation.
Matt joined Mayer Brown in 1975. Previously (1974-1975), he served as Law Clerk to The Honorable Philip W. Tone, US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Matt has been selected as one of the Best Lawyers in America® (Biotechnology Law) and as an "Illinois Leading Lawyer" (Commercial Litigation) by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company's Leading Lawyers Network.
