Many of us have experienced the grief of losing a loved one. The little things people do during that difficult time is always appreciated. Mary Uter is known for setting the highest standards in her work with families in grief.
Recently, a patient passed away and his wife had no transportation to come to the General to collect his belongings. She was especially anxious about her husband’s favorite hat. Without thinking twice, Mary carefully packed the items and made a special trip to the wife’s home. She was so grateful to Mary for bringing her those special belongings but even more grateful to have someone she could talk with about her grief. Again, Mary never hesitated. She sat down, stayed, and talked with the woman, offering comfort and compassion when it was needed the most.
As she was leaving, the woman tried to give Mary a small gift of appreciation and Mary graciously refused. The greatest gift for Mary was knowing she had made a difference in this woman’s life. |
