Ms. Shartsis is one of the founding partners of the Firm. She specializes in general business litigation, including breach of contract, business torts, unfair competition, intellectual property, antitrust, real estate, officer and director liability and corporate and partnership derivative litigation. In June 2003, Ms. Shartsis was chosen as one of the Top 50 Women Litigators in California by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal. She has also represented employers in wrongful termination and discrimination cases.
In the course of her practice, Ms. Shartsis counsels clients on antitrust and employment compliance matters. In addition, she has served as a party-appointed arbitrator in complex commercial cases and has also served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association in real estate, partnership and securities disputes.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
A substantial portion of Ms. Shartsis’ practice has been in federal court, and she served as a lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference from 1994 to 1997. She is a co-author of California Federal Court Practice, Local Civil Rules Annotated, a guide to local federal practice, and a contributing author of Federal Pretrial Civil Procedure in California, both of which are published by LexisNexis (Matthew Bender). Ms. Shartsis is past chair of the Litigation Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco.
Ms. Shartsis is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of California as well as the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Her state court practice has also been extensive in San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and Contra Costa County Superior Courts. She is a member of the Litigation Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco and various sections of the American Bar Association and is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. She is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and a member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco.
Ms. Shartsis has participated in programs sponsored by the Institute for the Study and Development of Legal Systems. She has lectured and demonstrated various alternative dispute resolution techniques to lawyers and judges in Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, India and Israel. She has served on numerous panels on a variety of topics, including case management, arbitrator disclosure obligations and law practice issues.
EDUCATION
Ms. Shartsis received an A.B. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969 and a J.D. from the University’s Boalt Hall School of Law in 1972, where she was a member of the California Law Review. She has remained involved in the Law School through a variety of activities and served as President of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association in 1994-95 |
