Mark T. Giles is the Chairman of the Board of VNB. Previously he served as President of Sterling Bank and its parent company, Sterling Bancshares, Inc., a publicly traded Houston, Texas financial institution, positions which he had held since January 1, 1995, and from which he resigned in December 1997 to join the effort to organize VNB. Prior to joining Sterling, Mr. Giles was President of Charter Bancshares, Inc. (beginning in 1988) and Charter National Bank-Houston, its lead subsidiary bank (beginning in 1989). Prior to joining Charter in 1986 as chief financial officer, Mr. Giles practiced law with the banking group of Bracewell & Patterson, LLP, a Houston law firm. In Houston, Mr. Giles was actively involved in various civic activities and organizations. In Charlottesville, he serves on the board of the Computers4Kids Program, as chairman of the board of the Blue Ridge Chapter of National Multiple Sclerosis Society, on the boards of the Thomas Jefferson Area United Way Chapter and the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council, and on the Martha Jefferson Leadership Council. In 1977, Mr. Giles received a BS degree in Finance from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and was recipient of the faculty's outstanding finance major award. Mr. Giles received a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1980. |
