Mark Johannessen is one of the founding professionals of Harris SBSB in McLean, Virginia. Specializing in retirement planning and asset management, he advises individuals, businesses and associations on a variety of financial planning issues. Mark was the 2005 recipient of the Financial Planner of the Year Award from the Financial Planning Association (FPA) - National Capital Chapter. From 2003 through 2005 Mark served on the Board of Directors for the 28,000 member FPA. He has been active in FPA and the International Association for Financial Planning (IAFP), one of FPA s predecessor organizations, for ten years. On the local level, he served as chapter president of the FPA-National Capital Chapter and held a variety of other leadership positions. Mark remains active in FPA, currently serving on the Government Relations Committee, Investment Committee, and Membership Committee. He is the current chair of the Financial Planning Week Committee and Hurricane Relief Center for Planners Task Force. Previously, Mark has served on FPA s Chapter Leadership Resource Council, and as facilitator for FPA s Regional Workshops for Chapter Leaders. After the September 11, 2001 tragedy, Mark initiated the design and implementation of FPA s pro-bono financial planning relief effort for victims families. In 2002 he was recognized by Financial Advisor magazine as one of the Future Stars of Financial Planning and Washingtonian magazine s Money Matters List of Financial Professionals. He is often quoted in the financial planning and mainstream press on a variety of financial planning issues. Mark received a BS in Economics and Political Science from the University of Utah in 1985, and has been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional licensee since 1991. Mark was an adjunct professor of financial planning for the Florida Institute of Technology (Alexandria, Virginia campus) from 1999 through 2002, where he taught retirement planning to CFP candidates. Mark is active in his local community, having served as president and board member of the University of Utah Alumni Chapter of Washington, DC and as president of the Catholic Business Network of Montgomery County (MD).
